Which barcode format should you use?

Retail products: EAN-13 is the global standard printed on nearly every product sold in stores — 13 digits, where the first 2–3 identify the issuing country's GS1 organization and the last is a check digit. UPC-A (12 digits) is its North American sibling; every UPC-A is readable as an EAN-13 with a leading zero. EAN-8 is a compact 8-digit version for small packaging like cosmetics and chewing gum.

Logistics and shipping: ITF-14 (14 digits) marks cartons and pallets — the outer shipping box that contains retail units. Its thick "bearer bars" tolerate direct printing on corrugated cardboard. The first digit is a packaging-level indicator (e.g. 1 = box of items), followed by the product's 13-digit GTIN.

Internal use: CODE128 is the best default for warehouse labels, tickets, membership cards, and asset tags — it encodes the full ASCII set at high density and includes a built-in checksum. CODE39 is an older alphanumeric format still common in government and automotive labels; it needs no checksum but produces wider barcodes. MSI is a digits-only legacy format used on some shelf labels, and Pharmacode (values 3–131070) is used in pharmaceutical packaging control, where it can be read at any speed and even upside down.
