What is EXIF metadata?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a block of hidden data that cameras and phones embed inside every photo they take. A single iPhone photo typically carries 40 or more fields: the exact device model, lens, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, the precise date and time down to the second — and, if location services are on, GPS coordinates accurate to a few meters. Professional cameras can even embed the body's serial number and the photographer's name.
That data is useful for organizing a photo library, but it becomes a privacy problem the moment a photo leaves your device. A photo taken at home and posted online with intact GPS data effectively publishes your street address. Timestamps and device identifiers can link separate photos to the same person. Metadata travels with the file through email, cloud drives, and many messaging apps.
Photos can also carry two related metadata blocks: IPTC (captions, credits, keywords used by newsrooms) and XMP (Adobe's extensible format written by Lightroom and Photoshop). This tool reads and removes all three.
How metadata removal works here — without quality loss
Most "metadata remover" tools re-save the whole image, silently recompressing your pixels. This tool doesn't. A JPEG file is a sequence of tagged segments, and metadata lives in specific ones: EXIF and XMP in APP1 segments, IPTC in APP13, free-text comments in COM. The tool walks the file's binary structure, drops exactly those segments, and copies everything else — including the compressed image data — byte-for-byte. Color-critical segments (JFIF, the ICC color profile, and the Adobe color marker) are deliberately kept so the image renders identically.
PNG files get the same treatment: metadata chunks (tEXt, zTXt, iTXt, eXIf, tIME) are dropped while the image data chunks pass through untouched, checksums and all. The result is a pixel-identical file that is often slightly smaller. Only WebP and TIFF fall back to a canvas re-encode, and the tool tells you when that happens. And because everything runs in your browser, the photo you are cleaning is never uploaded anywhere.
