How meta tags affect search and social sharing

Meta tags are HTML elements in a page's <head> that describe the page to machines: search engine crawlers, social platforms, and messaging apps. The two that matter most for search are the <title> (the blue headline in results — keep it under about 60 characters) and the meta description (the gray snippet — around 140–160 characters). Neither is a direct ranking factor, but both strongly influence whether people click your result.

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:image, etc.) were introduced by Facebook in 2010 and are now read by LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, and most link-preview systems. Without them, platforms guess at a title and image — often badly. The recommended og:image size is 1200×630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio). Twitter/X reads Open Graph too, but its own twitter:card tag controls whether the link renders as a small thumbnail (summary) or a full-width image (summary_large_image).

The canonical link and robots meta control indexing: rel="canonical" tells search engines which URL is the authoritative version when the same content is reachable at several addresses, and noindex removes a page from search results entirely.
