Why convert JPG to PNG?
Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. Converting to PNG stops that: PNG is lossless, so the image you have now is exactly what you keep, no matter how many times you save it.
People also convert JPG to PNG because a tool, template or print service only accepts PNG, or because they plan to cut out the background in an editor and need a format that can hold transparency afterwards.
What changes when you convert JPG to PNG
- Quality stays exactly the same — it doesn’t improve
- PNG preserves the JPG’s pixels perfectly, including any compression artifacts already in it. Converting can’t restore detail the JPG discarded.
- The file gets bigger
- PNG’s lossless compression is much less efficient on photos, so expect the PNG to be several times larger than the JPG. That’s normal and the reason JPG exists.
- No background is removed
- The PNG will support transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over — the image stays fully opaque until you cut out the background in an editor.
- Future edits stop degrading
- Once it’s a PNG, you can crop, annotate and re-save as often as you like without piling up new compression loss.
