Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?

PNG if you’ll edit the photo and want a lossless working copy. JPG if you want to share, email or upload it — a JPG is a fraction of the size of a PNG and looks the same at normal viewing sizes.

Why are the PNG files so big?

HEIC uses very efficient compression; PNG stores every pixel without discarding anything, which suits graphics but produces large files for photos.

How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will then be saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos stay HEIC, which is what this converter is for.

Why is the first conversion slower?

Browsers can’t decode HEIC on their own, so a HEIC decoder is loaded the first time you convert. After that, conversions start straight away.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. It’s an efficient format, but many Windows apps, websites and editors still can’t open it. Converting to PNG gives you a lossless copy that opens in virtually any editor or design tool.

Choose PNG when you plan to edit the photo and want no additional compression loss. If you just want to share or upload the photo, use HEIC to JPG instead — the files are far smaller.

What changes when you convert HEIC to PNG

Lossless copy of the decoded photo: PNG saves the photo’s pixels exactly as decoded from the HEIC, with no new compression loss on top.
Much larger files: HEIC is highly compressed. The same photo as a PNG is typically many times larger — often well over 10 MB for a full-resolution iPhone photo.
Photos with multiple images: Some HEIC files hold more than one image. Each one is converted to its own PNG.
Metadata isn’t carried over: EXIF details such as capture date and GPS location aren’t copied into the PNG, which is useful when sharing but worth knowing if you rely on them.
