Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges are preserved.

How much smaller will my images be?

It depends on the content. Photos and screenshots usually shrink a lot; tiny icons and flat graphics with few colours may not shrink at all and can even grow. The converter shows the before and after size of every file, so you can keep whichever is smaller.

Why does it say my browser can’t create WebP?

Converting to WebP relies on your browser’s built-in WebP encoder. Chrome, Edge and Firefox include one; some browsers — notably Safari — may not. If yours doesn’t, open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Is WebP supported by all browsers?

Every current major browser displays WebP, including Safari on iPhone and Mac. Very old browsers and some older desktop software don’t, which is why many sites also keep a PNG or JPG fallback.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

Why convert PNG to WebP?

PNG files are often the heaviest thing on a web page. WebP supports the same transparency as PNG but compresses far better, so converting logos, screenshots and product images can make pages noticeably lighter — which helps load speed and Core Web Vitals.

Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari displays WebP, so for images on a website it is a safe default today.

What changes when you convert PNG to WebP

Usually much smaller files: Photos and screenshots typically shrink dramatically. Tiny icons and flat graphics with only a few colours are the exception — they can come out the same size or even larger, so compare the sizes shown and keep whichever is smaller.
Transparency is kept: WebP supports alpha transparency, so cut-outs and logos keep their transparent backgrounds.
Lossy compression, controlled by the quality slider: Browsers encode WebP with lossy compression. At 90%+ quality results are visually very close to the PNG; lower settings save more space.
Some older software can’t open WebP: Browsers are fine, but some older desktop apps and upload forms may not accept .webp — keep the PNG for those.
